2023 April Family Festival

On a beautiful spring day in April, families from all over Derby gathered at Graham Trust Farm for a celebration of community, tradition, and good old-fashioned fun. The festival was a chance for people to come together and enjoy the beauty of the farm, reconnect with old friends and family, and participate in some classic Boer sports.

The day started off with an egg toss competition, where teams of two tossed eggs back and forth to each other, trying to see who could go the longest without dropping or breaking their egg. It was a hilarious sight, with participants gingerly tossing the eggs at first, and then gradually getting more and more daring as the competition heated up.

Next up was the sprint race, which had people of all ages lining up at the starting line to see who could run the fastest. There were separate races for kids and adults, with some impressive feats of speed on display.

The water balloon toss was a great way to cool off on a warm day, with participants standing across from each other and tossing water balloons back and forth. The goal was to see how far apart people could get before the balloons inevitably burst, and there were some impressive distances achieved.

The tug of war was a highlight of the day, with teams of family and friends facing off against each other in a battle of strength and determination. There were some fiercely contested matches, with lots of cheering and shouting from the sidelines.

Finally, the festival wrapped up with a game of Juksei, a traditional Boer game that involves throwing a wooden peg at a wooden block, trying to knock it over. It’s a game that requires skill and precision, and there were some impressive shots made by the participants.

Overall, the festival was a huge success, with everyone enjoying the chance to come together and celebrate the traditions and values that make Derby such a special place. We’re already looking forward to next year’s festival, and can’t wait to see what other Boer sports and traditions will be on display!
